A New Sugar Pine
Written by Dominic Xalli Anaya Gulaya
Sugar Pine has been around since the inception of this school itself, and it’s needed a lot of messing around with over the years– adjustments to how we call for submissions, organize our teams, choose our pieces, and even what program we use to lay out our magazine. For a while, it’s been pretty set in stone, and our issues have been lovely and consistent. This year, we’re changing things around again.
There are a few main areas we’re going to be making a lot of changes: layout, submissions, and of course this beautiful website!
This year, we’re taking a more artistic approach to the magazine’s layout– hoping to create some cross between a traditional literary magazine and more punk, artsy fanzines while still remaining accessible. We’re going to be playing around with color, setup, and even size of the book itself– both in dimensions, and length.
As part of that, we’re going to be a bit more selective than in previous years, and pieces will likely be going through several rounds of consideration, with some submitters being presented with a slightly edited version of their piece and asked for their approval.
Just because we’re honing our selection, though, doesn’t mean that we’re narrowing our scope. In fact, we’re going to be allowing for a few new kinds of submissions and really encouraging the “weirder” ones we’ve always accepted, too– like collages, comics, songs, scripts, concrete poetry, mixed media, photography, and so much more!
This year, we’ll be accepting both translation as its own art form– allowing students to translate other poet’s pieces into English– and student’s own pieces in other languages as long as they’re also accompanied by an English translation. We’re so excited to see the new submissions this could open us up to!
Leading Sugar Pine Lit through this year of new changes and getting to guide it through its grow is such an honor, and I can’t wait to see how all the creativity on campus and our wonderful team members come together to make this seventh issue.
